THE MOST ANTICIPATED MOVIES OF SUMMER 2016

Whether your exams are just beginning or drawing to an end, one thing we can all look forward to this summer is the multitude of blockbusters hitting the big screen. While it seems to be the summer of sequels, there's variety enough in this list to get everyone excited - so here are ten of the most anticipated movies of summer 2016 (in order of release).

1. Me Before You

Adapted from Jojo Moyes’ 2012 bestseller, this upcoming romance promises lots – the combination of the ‘cynical guy’ meets ‘quirky girl’ archetypes, the seemingly ‘terminally ill’ lover, and the Cinderella-style transformation of protagonist Lou will no doubt amount to success – and I got all that just from watching the trailers, which are tear-jerkers in themselves. The film features Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin (a pair so well matched other directors are probably mad they didn’t think of it first), amongst a myriad of British stars, and opens June 3rd.

2. Independence Day: Resurgence

Arriving at a screen near you on June 23rd, comes the sequel nobody expected, that sounds like it fits into the Divergent series… Following on from ‘Independence Day’, the highest grossing film of 1996 and ground-breaking in the genres of disaster film and sci-fi, this movie has a lot to live up to; especially considering Will Smith’s departure from the series. Despite this, the film has a lot of promise; from advancements in visual technology and a budget over twice the size of the original (coming in at $200m). In addition, the current state of America may benefit from a blockbuster in which everyone is actually getting along – everyone from Earth, that is.

3. The Secret Life of Pets

The first teaser trailer was released almost a year ago, and it’s fair to say the internet was excited at the least. Following on from the massive success of the Despicable Me franchise, Illumination Entertainment’s next move is into the minds of our pets – more specifically, Max the terrier and his friends in Manhattan. While it has been compared to Toy Story by some, I’ll say it’s more like this year’s Inside Out and will unsurprisingly storm the box office when released this June 24th! I mean, there’s humour for all ages, as well as some really cute animals – what more is there to be said?

4. Now You See Me: The Second Act

The Four Horsemen are back in yet another sequel on this list, this time to 2013’s ‘Now You See Me’. While the first installment received mixed reviews from critics, ‘The Second Act’ was announced due to box office success, and will be released on the 4th of July. First, we met the magicians-turned-vigilante’s and followed them through twists, turns and very impressive trickery. Now, some time has passed – Lizzy Caplan is replacing Isla Fisher, the Horsemen go global (with filming having taken place in Macau, China), and the magic promises to be bigger and better than ever.

5. Ghostbusters

Now. There has been a lot of discussion surrounding the new Ghostbusters adaptation. Like it or loathe it, you can’t deny it's very highly anticipated – whether through the new take on the casting, or its notoriety through being officially the most disliked movie trailer on Youtube, ever. 32 years after the crew first hit the big screen, the ghosts are back – and this time they have to deal with Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. There are many questions surrounding this reboot – which will be released July 15th – mainly: is it needed? Will it work? And most importantly, who you gonna call?

6. The BFG

Everyone’s favourite 24-foot giant is coming to life via the movie screen this July 22nd. Disney, Dahl and Spielberg have combined to form a superhero of storytelling – and the trailer alone exhibits shots capturing the beauty of the world, as well as the nostalgia of the story. The 2016 release of the film celebrates 100 years since Roald Dahl’s birth, and let’s just say it’s clear that the scale, as well as our expectations, are as big as The BFG himself.

7. Nerve

A game of dare, gone seriously wrong. ‘Nerve’ sees Emma Roberts and Dave Franco pitted against, well, the whole internet, in an epic test of commitment and limits, as social media is taken to the extreme. The film – released July 27th – is based on Jeanne Ryan’s 2012 novel of the same name, and while the trailer kind of came out of nowhere, the internet happily jumped on the concept, and had everyone asking: are you a Watcher, or a Player?

8. Jason Bourne

Oh look, another sequel! Simply titled ‘Jason Bourne’, Matt Damon returns to the franchise that flaunts the fact it hasn’t quite exhausted its story yet, with the newest tagline of ‘you know his name’ - and by the looks of it, we wouldn’t have it any other way. This list is slightly lacking in pure action, and there’s no doubt this latest Bourne installment will have plenty to offer, so strap in for July 29th (unless you’re more interested in the tale of a forgetful fish than one of a forgetful fighter…)

9. Finding Dory

For thirteen years we just kept waiting, just kept swimming, and finally, it’s happening. Everyone’s favourite forgetful Blue Tang, Dory, is back and she’s leading her very own adventure – to find her parents. The difference is, this time the adults are probably even more excited to see the film than the children, with Finding Nemo being regarded as one of the best Disney/Pixar films made; it tops many people’s lists, and holds a 99% Rotten Tomatoes rating. Apologies to all other films released the weekend of July 29th, looks like most people will be otherwise occupied.

10. Suicide Squad

It looks like the world has collectively decided that we’re a bit sick of superhero movies, and the industry is responding – giving us ‘antiheroes’ that everyone can love. The success of February’s Deadpool is proof enough, and the long awaited Suicide Squad will finally hit screens on August 5th. If the trailer set to Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ is anything to go by, we’re in for a treat (and maybe a few tricks) when this gang assemble to finish our summer movie marathon.
